Massage Therapy for Injuries & Mental-Emotional Well-beingInjuries
In most sessions, Western orthopedic testing and massage techniques are combined with Eastern Zen Shiatsu (acupressure). This allows specific treatment of your complaint while putting the body into a more balanced state in which healing can occur more readily. Chinese Foot Reflexology may also be included, along with oriental modalities such as gua sha (similar to Graston Technique) and cupping which help relieve pain, increase circulation, and maximize healing (see below for more details). Mental-Emotional Well-being It is not unusual to have trauma associated with an injury or medical treatment (such as Cancer). Although I do not combine counseling with massage, having a counseling background allows me to identify and adapt to special needs and circumstances in a way that others might find more challenging. There is also a good deal of research on massage and it's positive affects on reducing anxiety and depression. Please find more information on the Patient Resources page. |
I've never had a massage before. What can I expect?
First we will go over your health history and goals for the session. Generally you are covered with a sheet at all times except for the area being worked on -- except in the case of Shiatsu which can be done fully clothed. Pregnant women or individuals who cannot lay on their face or back can generally be worked on their side. Please feel free to ask any questions as well as share any expectations or concerns you may have.
OTHER MODALITIES:
Gua ShaWhen the muscles are tight, it neither allows blood to efficiently deliver nutrients to the tissue nor to get rid of wastes – thus they can become areas of chronic pain and tension. Oriental Medicine might call these areas of qi and blood stagnation.
The intention of gua sha is to raise sha or an intentional rash up and out of the body. It usually fades within several days. Sha only occurs where there is stagnation so it is diagnostic as well. With Gua Sha, the skin is lubricated with lotion and a tool such as a porcelain spoon is stroked over the affected area. It is very similar to the Graston technique that chiropractors use. It is a surprisingly relaxing and effective tool. CuppingCupping has a similar effect on the body as Gua Sha but it tends to pull stagnation more deeply out of the body. It is a great technique on the back for chronic tension, or pulling toxins out of the body.
A partial vacuum is created using glass cups that have been exposed to a heat source and are applied quickly to the skin creating suction. |
