Believe it or not, when I was a kid, I was deathly afraid of needles. Ok, actually I was afraid of needles even as a teen and young adult.
I remember seeing my dad coming home from work (he was a doctor) and promptly hiding in my closet because I knew that he had come home with vaccines for all of us. Eventually I did come out with my tail between my legs and resigned to my fate, because I knew it had to be done, but I was NOT happy about it!
In fact, the first time I thought of going to Acupuncture school was right after I got my Massage Therapy license, twenty years ago this December 6th. And one of the main reasons I didn't go then? The needles of course!
Fast forward several years later. An acupuncturist asks to do a trade with me. For years, I had been hearing my clients tell me about how much Acupuncture had helped them. I'd even referred a few people for acupuncture...and I realized that if I was going to refer people, I should at least experience it for myself -- so I gathered up my courage and set up an appointment.
My First Experience of Acupuncture
As it turned out, the day that I came in ended up being one of the most undeniably stressful days of my life. I'm not exaggerating - something rather terrible had happened to someone close to me and I was in the thick of acute and powerful emotions. The Acupuncturist put just four points in (I know what they are now). Not only were the needles no big deal, the result could only be described as transcendental.
All the worries washed away -- the stress, the feelings of overwhelm and I felt slightly floaty - a place I have since come to know as "Aculand." By the end of the session I actually felt peaceful and able to deal with what was in front of me.
Of course now I know that the hypodermic needles of the doctor's office are nothing like the hair thin needles of acupuncture, but sometimes we just need to experience it for ourselves to get over the fear.
The First Ever Acupuncture Happy Hour
This December 10th I am holding my first every Acupuncture Happy Hour...both to celebrate my 20th anniversary of becoming a licensed practitioner and to celebrate my clients who have made those 20 years possible.
Acupuncture Happy Hour is designed purely as a stress-reliever with generally no more than 5 points - no diagnosis or treatment involved. Don't let that fool you though. It doesn't take much to get a powerful response. Just think, my first treatment was only four points!
Bring your friends and family who have never had acupuncture before, coworkers, students and anyone else you think might like to see what acupuncture is like or needs a stress reliever.
There will also be treats and a FREE drawing for a 75 minute session - which will be drawn on December 21st. You may make one entry during the Acupuncture Happy Hour and one entry for every individual treatment you receive until December 21st. Gift Certificates will also be available for purchase.
Acupuncture Happy Hour Sessions will be discounted from a very reasonable $25 to $15 for this night only. Come and join the fun and bring your friends! Hours will be 4-7pm and last about 30 minutes. The last appointment will be taken at 6:30 pm.
